Short answer: pick Agadir for a beach-and-sun break (especially in winter or with children), Marrakech for culture, shopping and food. With a week, do both: Marrakech first for 2–3 nights, then wind down in Agadir.

Pick Agadir if…

  • You want a beach holiday. A 6 km sandy crescent with a promenade, lifeguards in summer, and surf beaches 20 km north. See Agadir beaches.
  • You travel in winter. 21–22°C afternoons and 7–8 hours of sun a day from December to February. Month by month: best time to visit Agadir.
  • You travel in July or August. Agadir stays around 27°C while Marrakech bakes.
  • You have young children. Easy logistics, flat promenade, gentle pace: Agadir with kids.
  • You surf, or want to learn. Beginners April–October, big swells October–March: Taghazout surf lessons.
  • You want low hassle. Agadir is one of the most relaxed cities in Morocco.

The honest downside: sightseeing in Agadir itself fills a day or two. Most of the interest is in activities and day trips such as Paradise Valley and Souss-Massa.

Pick Marrakech if…

  • It is your first time in Morocco and you want the Morocco of the photos: medina, souks, palaces, riads.
  • You travel in spring or autumn, when Marrakech’s weather is at its best.
  • You love food, shopping and architecture more than lying on a beach.
  • You want the Atlas Mountains on day trips.

How to combine both

Our pick for a week: 2–3 nights in Marrakech, then 4–5 nights in Agadir. Culture first while you have energy, beach at the end. If flights allow, fly into one city and out of the other to avoid the trip back.

  1. Days 1–3, Marrakech: the medina, souks and palaces; one evening on Jemaa el-Fna. Plan it with things to do in Marrakech.
  2. Day 4, transfer: CTM bus (about 3–3.75 hours, 135 MAD) or a private transfer to Agadir; afternoon on the beach.
  3. Days 5–7, Agadir: cable car and kasbah, Souk El Had (closed Mondays), a surf lesson in Taghazout, Paradise Valley or Crocoparc. See the 3-day Agadir itinerary.

Only based in Agadir? A Marrakech day trip is possible (organised tours €35–45, 12–14 hours), but it means about 7 hours on the road for 5–6 hours in the city. Better as 1–2 nights, and avoid it in July and August, when Marrakech reaches 37–40°C. With a full week in Agadir, see one week in Agadir.

Agadir or Marrakech: frequently asked questions

Is Agadir or Marrakech better for a first trip to Morocco?

It depends on what you want from the trip. For culture, souks, palaces and food, Marrakech: it is the one with the UNESCO medina. For a relaxed beach holiday with sun, sea and low hassle, Agadir. Many first-timers combine them: 2–3 nights in Marrakech, then the rest by the sea in Agadir.

Which is warmer, Agadir or Marrakech?

In winter they are similar by day (Agadir about 21–22°C, Marrakech around 19°C), but Marrakech nights are much colder (around 6°C against 8–10°C in Agadir). In summer the difference is huge: Agadir stays at 26–27°C thanks to the ocean, while Marrakech regularly reaches 36–38°C and more.

How do I get from Agadir to Marrakech?

There is no train. The CTM bus runs about 10 times a day, takes 3–3.75 hours and costs 135 MAD (170 MAD Premium). By car it is about 3 hours on the A7 motorway (tolls). Organised day trips from Agadir cost €35–45 but mean about 7 hours on the road for 5–6 hours in Marrakech. See the Marrakech day trip guide.

Is Agadir cheaper than Marrakech?

Generally a little, for food and taxis, and resort hotels in Agadir are good value, often all-inclusive. Marrakech has higher tourist prices in the medina, but also a huge range of riads from budget to luxury. A petit taxi ride in Agadir costs 15–30 MAD; a mint tea in a local café 8–15 MAD.

Can you swim in Marrakech?

Only in pools: Marrakech has no beach. Agadir has a 6 km city beach with lifeguards in summer, cool Atlantic water (16.6–20.5°C through the year) and surf beaches just north at Taghazout.

Is Agadir or Marrakech better with kids?

Agadir is easier: the beach, a flat promenade, Crocoparc, the cable car and a water park, with mild temperatures. Marrakech works with older children who enjoy markets and a pool to retreat to, but its summer heat and crowded lanes are hard with small ones. See Agadir with kids.
