Agadir with Kids: What Works, What Bores Them, and the Sea

Agadir is an easy family destination: a long sandy beach, a flat promenade, mild weather and a handful of outings children love. The thing to get right is the sea, which is more dangerous than it looks. Here are the safety rules, the prices for each activity and a three-day plan for a family of four.

The one rule: children swim only in front of a lifeguard, in daylight, and never under a black flag. Outside about mid-June to mid-September there are few or no lifeguards, and spring is when most accidents happen. Everything else in Agadir is easy.

Beach safety: flags, currents and lifeguards

The 6 km city beach is wide, sandy and shallow-looking, which is exactly why families relax too much. The Atlantic here has rip currents, and winter storms dig holes that are invisible from the shore.

  • The numbers: more than 70 drowning incidents and 5 deaths on Agadir beach between April and May 2025, before the summer season; in summer 2024, 3 deaths at Aghroud and more than 200 incidents across the beaches of Agadir Ida-Outanane.
  • Lifeguards and police patrol the main beach from about mid-June to mid-September, 08:00–20:00. Set up your towel near a lifeguard post.
  • Flags: black means swimming is prohibited. Green, yellow and red flags are also generally used in Morocco; if in doubt, ask the lifeguard.
  • Known risky stretch: between the Amadil and Robinson hotels, near the mouth of the Oued El Houar.
  • Never at night. Night swimming is one of the main causes of drowning here.
  • The water is cool (16.6–20.5°C through the year). Small children get cold fast; a shorty wetsuit helps.
  • Paradise Valley pools have no lifeguards and hidden rocks. Keep children well away from the cliff-jump spots.

What kids love

  1. The cable car (all ages). Six minutes up to the Agadir Oufella kasbah, with the whole bay below. 130 MAD return over 1.40 m, 100 MAD under 1.40 m, free under 0.80 m. Buy at the station by Pont Tildi; reseller tickets cost about double. The kasbah enclosure is a separate ticket (90 MAD adults, 65 MAD foreign children 7–17, free under 7), with wooden walkways but rocky sections that are no good for strollers. Windy at the top: bring a layer. Cable car guide.
  2. Crocoparc (all ages). 300+ Nile crocodiles, pythons, iguanas, tortoises and marmosets in gardens 15 km east of Agadir. 100 MAD adults, 70 MAD children 3–12, daily 10:00–17:30. The official shuttle package (return bus from Uniprix Agadir, entry, guided tour, tea) is 250 MAD adult / 150 MAD child, cheaper than most reseller transfers. Crocoparc guide.
  3. Danialand water park (season only, roughly April to August). Slides and pools from the cable car’s operator. 2026 prices: 190 MAD over 1.40 m and 150 MAD under 1.40 m until 10 July, then 250 / 210 MAD from 11 July to 31 August; under 80 cm free. Loungers 25–30 MAD, lockers 20–25 MAD. September and October opening is not confirmed. Water parks guide.
  4. A camel ride by the Oued Souss (families). Two hours through the eucalyptus to the river mouth with mint tea and hotel pickup costs €16–20 per person on the platforms. From October to March you may see flamingos on the way, never guaranteed. Camel rides.
  5. Flamingos and birds at Souss-Massa (6+, with patience). The Massa sector is free to enter, about 1h15 south. Flamingos October–March; binoculars essential. Full-day tours 350–500 MAD. Souss-Massa guide.
  6. A 1-hour boat trip from the Marina (€15 per person with pickup). Go in the morning when the sea is calmer; seasickness is possible on the Atlantic swell. Boat trips.
  7. Quads (passengers from about 6, drivers 16+). Closed shoes and long trousers, morning or sunset. Quad biking.
  8. A first surf lesson for older children on the beginner beaches north of Agadir (April–October is the easy season). Group lessons 250–450 MAD with board and wetsuit. Taghazout surf.

What bores them (and what is closed)

  • Argan cooperative stops on Paradise Valley and quad tours: a sales stop with pressure to buy. Warn the children, or pick tours that skip it.
  • Souk El Had shopping beyond about an hour. Go on a weekday morning, let each child pick one thing, leave. Closed on Mondays.
  • The Amazigh Heritage Museum is small and interesting for adults (jewellery, manuscripts); under-10s give it 15 minutes.
  • A Marrakech day trip: about 7 hours on the road for 5–6 hours in the medina. With young children, stay a night or skip it. Marrakech day trip.
  • The Vallée des Oiseaux (Valley of the Birds), the old free mini-zoo in the centre, has been closed since 2021 for a rebuild with no confirmed reopening date. Many older guides still list it.
  • Dolphin World: we do not recommend it (see the FAQ).

Practical tips for families

  • Taxis: a petit taxi takes a maximum of 3 passengers. A family of four needs two petits taxis, a grand taxi or an app car (Uber launched UberXL in Agadir in July 2026). Day rides in town are 15–30 MAD on the meter.
  • Strollers work well on the promenade and the Marina; not at the kasbah or in Paradise Valley. A carrier for those.
  • Sun: the breeze hides how strong it is. Hats and high-factor sunscreen even in winter.
  • Food: grilled fish at the port stalls (agree the price first), tagine, couscous on Fridays, fresh orange juice for 10–15 MAD. Water is 6–8 MAD for 1.5 L in shops.
  • Free outings: the promenade, the Jardin d’Olhão (free, open about 08:00–19:00), the beach, and the free esplanade outside the kasbah walls.
  • Emergencies: police 19, ambulance 15. More in Is Agadir safe?

A 3-day family plan

  1. Day 1, beach and kasbah. Morning on the beach near a lifeguard post (in season). Lunch on the promenade. 16:00: cable car up, kasbah enclosure before it closes (19:00, 20:00 in summer), sunset from the esplanade, cable car down. Dinner at the Marina.
  2. Day 2, crocodiles. Official Crocoparc shuttle from Uniprix at 09:30 (runs on certain days; check by phone) or a taxi, 2 hours in the park, back for lunch. Afternoon at the pool or beach. Evening: grilled fish at the port stalls.
  3. Day 3, water or camels. April to August: Danialand from opening time (arrive early for loungers). October to March: a 2-hour camel ride along the Oued Souss looking for flamingos, then an afternoon at the Medina Polizzi (children 20 MAD, under 4 free) or the beach.

Longer stay? Add Paradise Valley for older children (spring and autumn) and a beach day at Taghazout. The 3-day itinerary and the best time to visit help with the rest.

Agadir with kids: frequently asked questions

Is Agadir good for kids?

Yes, it is one of the easiest places in Morocco for families: a 6 km sandy beach with a flat promenade, mild weather all year (21–27°C afternoons), low hassle, and a short list of child-proof outings: the cable car, Crocoparc, a camel ride, the water park in season. The one serious risk is the sea, so read the beach-safety section before the first swim.

Is the sea in Agadir safe for children?

Only with care. The bay looks gentle but has rip currents and holes after winter storms; there were more than 70 drowning incidents and 5 deaths on Agadir beach in April–May 2025 alone, before lifeguards started. Swim only in front of lifeguards (about mid-June to mid-September, 08:00–20:00), never at night, never under a black flag, and keep small children within arm’s reach in the water.

How much does the cable car cost for children?

At the station ticket office (2025 board): 130 MAD return for anyone over 1.40 m, 100 MAD for children under 1.40 m, and free under 0.80 m. Price depends on height, not age. Reseller tickets online cost about double. Full details on the cable car tickets page.

What age is Crocoparc for?

All ages. Entry is 100 MAD for adults and 70 MAD for children aged 3–12. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours. Feeding shows happen in summer (up to five a day); in winter the crocodiles may not be fed at all. Shade is limited at midday, so go at 10:00.

Can children ride quads in Agadir?

Operators usually let children from about 6 ride as passengers with an adult; you need to be 16 or over to drive your own quad. Helmets and goggles are supplied. Choose small-group operators with a safety briefing and avoid the midday heat in summer. See quad biking in Agadir.

Is the Vallée des Oiseaux (Valley of the Birds) open?

No. The small free zoo-park in the city centre has been closed since 2021 for a full rebuild, and every announced reopening date has been missed. There is no confirmed date. The main bus hub, "P.E. Vallée des Oiseaux", keeps the name, so do not be confused by bus signs.

Is Dolphin World suitable for kids?

We do not recommend it. The dolphinarium in Anza opened despite NGO opposition, TripAdvisor rates it 3.2/5 and refuses to sell it on animal-welfare grounds. Wild dolphins are sometimes seen on boat trips from the Marina, never guaranteed.
