Be honest about the clock. 6–7 hours of driving for 3–5 hours in Essaouira. It can be done, but it is a long day. If you have the time, one night in Essaouira is a much better trip.
Bus or tour?

CTM fares and times from ctm.ma for a sample day (5 November 2026); tour prices from GetYourGuide listings, checked October 2026. More in Agadir attraction prices.
Two CTM tickets cost about 210–220 MAD (~€20), against €36–43 for a tour. The tour adds hotel pickup and stops on the way; the bus gives you more control, especially if you stay the night. Supratours may also run the coast route, but we could not confirm its timetable.
CTM timetable (sample day)
| Agadir → Essaouira | Arrives | Fare |

| 08:15 | 11:45 | 110 MAD |
| 11:30 | 15:20 | 105 MAD |
| 13:30 | 17:00 | 110 MAD |

What fits in a day
- 08:15 CTM from Agadir, or hotel pickup on a tour. Going north, sit on the left for the ocean side.
- On the way: the road passes Tamri and Tamanar through argan country. Tours usually stop for the goats and a cooperative; some stop at Taghazout beach.
- Late morning: arrive in Essaouira. Start with the fishing port and its blue boats.
- Lunch: fish by the port or in the medina. Agree the price before anything is cooked.
- Afternoon: walk the ramparts and the medina lanes.
- 16:30 CTM back (about 20:00 in Agadir), or the tour's return.
With only 3–5 hours, do not try to see everything: the port, the walls and one long walk through the medina is a good day.
Argan goats and cooperatives on the way
The N1 north of Agadir runs through argan country, and the goats-in-trees stop is part of almost every tour. Goats do climb argan trees to eat the fruit. At roadside photo spots, herders may ask for money for pictures; agree the amount first or skip it.
The cooperative stop is a sales stop. Fair benchmarks: cosmetic argan oil about 300–650 MAD per litre at cooperatives, culinary oil about 250–350 MAD; Euronews put a litre at around 600 MAD in 2025. Very cheap oil is usually diluted. Our Agadir scams guide explains the "Berber pharmacy" pitch.
Stay overnight instead?
Our recommendation: if you can spare a night, stay. Take the 08:15 CTM up, spend the afternoon and evening in town, and take an afternoon bus back the next day (14:30, 16:30 or 19:30). You halve the driving per day and see Essaouira after the day-trippers leave.
With a week in Agadir there is room for a one-night Essaouira trip. On a 3-day trip, a shorter excursion such as Paradise Valley or Taroudant fits better.
Tips
- Bring a windproof layer. Essaouira is windy.
- Surfers: Imsouane is on the same coast road, about halfway, if you would rather stop for a surf.
- Choosing between big-city trips? Compare with the Marrakech day trip from Agadir: similar driving, very different day.
- Check the weather today before you go.
Essaouira from Agadir: frequently asked questions
How long is the trip from Agadir to Essaouira?
About 175 km on the N1 coast road, 3–3.5 hours each way, via Tamri and Tamanar. A return day trip means 6–7 hours on the road, and tours run 10–11 hours door to door.
How much is the bus from Agadir to Essaouira?
CTM charges 105–110 MAD each way (about €10). On the sample day we checked (5 November 2026) buses left Agadir at 08:15, 11:30 and 13:30, and Essaouira at 14:30, 16:30 and 19:30. Book on ctm.ma; buses leave from Agadir's Gare Routière Municipale.
Can I do Essaouira as a day trip by bus?
Yes, but it is tight. The 08:15 CTM arrives at 11:45; the 14:30 back gives you under 3 hours in town, the 16:30 back gives you about 4h45 and gets you to Agadir around 20:00. A tour gives you a similar amount of time without the bus station.
How much is an Essaouira day trip from Agadir?
Shared tours on GetYourGuide start from €36–43 per person for a 10-hour day, some with a stop at Taghazout beach; standard day trips list from €39. That is roughly the same as two CTM tickets plus a taxi to the station, with hotel pickup included.
Should I stay overnight in Essaouira instead?
If you can, yes. Essaouira is better as an overnight: you avoid 6–7 hours of driving in one day and see the town in the evening and early morning, when the day-trippers have gone. Take the 08:15 CTM up and any afternoon bus back the next day.
Will I see goats in the argan trees?
Possibly. The coast road runs through argan country, and tours often stop at a goat-tree photo spot and an argan oil cooperative. If a herder asks for money for photos, agree the amount first or skip it.
What should I bring?
A windproof layer: Essaouira is a windy town. Sunscreen, cash for lunch, and if you take the bus north, sit on the left side for the ocean views.
