The word "hammam" covers three very different things. A 15-dirham neighbourhood bath where locals wash, a 150-dirham spa ritual done for you, and a hotel spa. The price tells you which one you are looking at.
The three kinds of hammam
- The public (neighbourhood) hammam. Hot tiled rooms, buckets, local families. 15–20 MAD to get in; an attendant (tayaba for women, kessal for men) scrubs you for 10–30 MAD more. Examples: Hammam Charaf (20 MAD entry, 120 MAD with soap, glove, scrub and massage), Hammam Salam (20 / 100 MAD). In Aourir, entry is 15 MAD and a massage 50 MAD. Always separated by sex. You bring your own kit.
- The tourist or day-spa hammam. The same ritual, but done on you, with towels and products supplied. 90–220 MAD with a gommage. Les Bains d'Agadir (women only): 90 MAD traditional, 120 MAD herbal, 180 MAD private. Hammam Al Madina: about 150 MAD, 180–220 MAD with the black-soap scrub. Le Boudoir Oriental: 200 MAD.
- Hammam with massage, and hotel spas. 250–450 MAD with a 1-hour massage; full rituals 300–950 MAD. Argan Phyto House does 1-hour rituals for 200–350 MAD, runs a free hotel shuttle and is closed on Fridays. The Argan Palace's communal hammam starts at about 200 MAD, with massages at 250–450 MAD. Couples packages are around 500 MAD.

What happens, step by step
- Undress to swimwear or underwear bottoms (public hammam) or the disposables the spa gives you. Leave your things in a locker or basket.
- The hot room. 10–15 minutes of steam and warm water to soften the skin. In a public hammam you fill buckets and pour them over yourself.
- Black soap. The olive-based savon beldi is spread over your body and left for a few minutes.
- The scrub (gommage). The attendant goes over your whole body with the kessa glove. Vigorous, and you will be surprised at what comes off. Say "shwiya" (gently) if it is too much.
- Rinse and, in a spa, a clay mask (ghassoul) and hair wash.
- Rest with mint tea. If you booked a massage, it comes now.
What to bring
- Public hammam: flip-flops, towel, swimwear or underwear, black soap, a kessa glove, shampoo, a change of clothes, and small change for the attendant. Black soap and gloves cost very little at Souk El Had.
- Spa or tourist hammam: nothing. They supply towels, products and disposable underwear. Leave jewellery at the hotel.
Etiquette and tips
- Keep your bottoms on in a public hammam; no photos; keep your voice down.
- Tip the scrubber. It is expected.
- Book spas for weekends and late afternoons, the slots that fill first.
- Not after sunburn or waxing. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition, ask a doctor first.
- Drink water after, and do not plan anything energetic. A hammam the evening after a quad trip or a surf lesson is the right order.
- Argan oil upsell: spas and cooperatives sell oils after the treatment. Check the benchmark on fair prices in Agadir (about 600 MAD a litre in 2025) before buying; suspiciously cheap oil is usually diluted.
Transfer packages vs going yourself
The platform packages (from €23–24) bundle hotel pickup, the hammam and often a massage at a fixed price. They make sense if you are staying outside the centre or in Taghazout, or want everything arranged. If you can take a petit taxi (15–30 MAD in town by day), booking a day spa directly is usually cheaper. Some spas, such as Argan Phyto House, run their own free hotel shuttle.
A hammam fits best on a rest day of a week in Agadir, and it is a good rainy-day option in winter (check Agadir weather today). Ignore timeshare and excursion touts on the promenade offering "free" spa gifts; they are on the Agadir scams list.
Hammam in Agadir: frequently asked questions
How much is a hammam in Agadir?
A public neighbourhood hammam costs 15–20 MAD entry, plus 10–30 MAD if an attendant scrubs you. A tourist or day-spa hammam with gommage (scrub) is 90–220 MAD. Hammam plus a 1-hour massage is 250–450 MAD. Online packages with hotel transfers start at €23–24.
What should I bring to a public hammam?
Flip-flops, a towel, swimwear or underwear bottoms, black soap (savon beldi), a kessa scrubbing glove and a change of clothes. Soap and glove are cheap in Souk El Had. Spas supply everything, including disposable underwear.
Are hammams in Agadir mixed?
Public hammams are always separated by sex, with separate sections or separate hours. Some tourist hammams are women-only (Les Bains d'Agadir, for example); others offer couples packages at around 500 MAD.
Do I need to book?
Not for a public hammam: walk in. For spas, book for weekends and late afternoons, the busiest slots. Argan Phyto House is closed on Fridays.
How long does a hammam take?
Allow about an hour for a public hammam with a scrub. Massage packages include a 1-hour massage, so with the ritual and a rest afterwards plan around 2 hours.
Should I tip in a hammam?
Yes, tip the person who scrubs you. In a public hammam the scrub itself costs 10–30 MAD on top of entry; a small tip on top is customary.
When should I avoid a hammam?
Right after sunburn or waxing. If you are pregnant or have a heart condition, ask a doctor first: the heat is intense.
Is the online hammam package worth it?
It is worth it if you want hotel transfers and a fixed price in euros (from €23–24; €38–43 with an argan cooperative visit; Headout €40). If you can take a taxi, booking a spa directly in dirhams is usually cheaper.
