  • Ramadan: 10:00–16:30.
  • Last entry: 30 minutes before closing.

The free esplanade outside the walls stays open after the enclosure closes. Check what else is open on the day with our Agadir opening hours tool.

The 1960 earthquake and the kasbah

Agadir Oufella was the old fortified town on the hill above the port. On 29 February 1960 at about 23:40, an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 lasting about 15 seconds destroyed the kasbah and most of the city. Around 15,000 people died, about a third of the population. The ruins on the hill became a memorial site, and the city you see today was rebuilt after the disaster.

After a long restoration, the enclosure reopened to visitors on 3 February 2024, during the Yennayer (Amazigh New Year) celebrations. It is run by the SDR Tourisme Souss-Massa and had passed 100,000 visitors by July 2025.

On the northern slope of the hill, white stones spell out "Allah, Al-Watan, Al-Malik" (God, Country, King), Morocco's motto, in Arabic. It is visible from the beach and lit at night.

The earthquake photos and archives are not inside the kasbah: they are in the small Musée de la Mémoire in the Jardin d'Olhão, downtown.

What you see inside

  1. The Saadian gate. The restored main entrance to the enclosure.
  2. Raised wooden walkways. They run over the ruins of the town, so you see the foundations without walking on them.
  3. The memorial trail. Plaques along the walkways tell the story of the town and the night of the earthquake.
  4. The south wall and ramparts. The best viewpoints: the port and Marina below, the 6 km beach curving south.

The visit takes about 50 minutes. There is little signage, so the 30 MAD audio guide (Arabic, Amazigh, French, English, Spanish) is the difference between looking at walls and understanding what happened here.

How to get up

  • Cable car (easiest): 130 MAD return from the lower station at Pont Tildi, about 6 minutes each way. Everything about prices, hours and night rides is on our Agadir cable car tickets page.
  • Taxi or car: to the mid-hill car park, then a 10–15 minute walk. A petit taxi from downtown costs roughly 30–50 MAD; agree before you get in.
  • City bus: Alsa line L24 "Pied Oufella – Kasbah Oufella". Cheap, but the fare is not published online.
  • On foot: a marked 2.8 km trail, 30–45 minutes up. Steep and without shade: not in the summer midday heat.
  • From a cruise ship: cable car + kasbah takes 2–3 hours; see the Agadir cruise port guide.

Best time to go

10:00–11:30 for clear air and fewer people, or the last hour before closing for the low light on the bay. Sunset is around 17:15 in early December and 19:45 in late June, before closing time in both seasons, so if you are inside by the last entry you can watch it from the ramparts. Avoid the early afternoon in summer: there is no shade at all. On a hazy or windy day the view suffers; our Agadir weather today page shows the current wind and sky. For how it fits into a day with the souk and the beach, see Agadir in 1 day.

Things nobody tells you

  • It is always windy up there. Bring a windbreaker and a hat, even in summer.
  • Camel-photo hustlers wait at the top. Agree a price before the photo, not after; more on this in Agadir scams.
  • It is a memorial site over a town where thousands died. Dress modestly and keep it respectful.
  • With kids: the walkways are fine, the rocky approach is not stroller-friendly. See Agadir with kids.
  • Pair it with the Medina Polizzi, a 1990s tribute to the lost old town, or the Amazigh Heritage Museum downtown. More ideas in things to do in Agadir.

Agadir Oufella Kasbah: frequently asked questions

How much is the entrance to Agadir Oufella Kasbah?

90 MAD (~€8) for a foreign adult, 65 MAD for a foreign child aged 7–17, 20 MAD for Moroccans and foreign residents (10 MAD for resident children), free under 7. The audio guide is 30 MAD extra. The esplanade and viewpoints outside the walls are free.

Is the kasbah included in the cable car ticket?

No. The cable car (130 MAD return) and the kasbah (90 MAD) are run by different organisations and sold at different counters. Budget 220 MAD per foreign adult for both.

What are the kasbah opening hours?

Daily 10:00–19:00, until 20:00 in summer; during Ramadan 10:00–16:30. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. If you ride the cable car at night, the enclosure will be shut and you only get the free esplanade.

What does "God, Country, King" on the hill mean?

It is Morocco's national motto, "Allah, Al-Watan, Al-Malik", written in Arabic in white stones on the northern slope of the hill. It is visible from most of the city and lit at night.

How do I get up to the kasbah without the cable car?

By petit taxi or car to the mid-hill car park, then a 10–15 minute walk up; on foot by the marked 2.8 km trail (30–45 minutes, steep and shadeless); or on Alsa city bus L24 "Pied Oufella – Kasbah Oufella".

How long do I need at Agadir Oufella?

About 50 minutes on the walkways inside the walls, 1–1.5 hours with the views. Add 20 minutes for the cable car ride up and down.

Is Agadir Oufella worth visiting?

Yes, for the view of the whole bay and for the memorial to the 1960 earthquake, which explains why Agadir looks the way it does. Do not expect a palace: it is a restored wall around ruins, with walkways and plaques. Take the audio guide.

Can I visit with a stroller or wheelchair?

Partly. The wooden walkways are level, but the approach and some sections are rocky and not suited to strollers or wheelchairs. Bring a baby carrier for small children.
