The board and wetsuit belong in the lesson price. If a school quotes a cheap lesson and then adds a surcharge for equipment, walk on: that is the main red flag in Taghazout. Check today's waves above, or the full Agadir weather and surf forecast, before you book.

A single lesson is a fun morning; you will probably stand up a few times on the whitewater. To actually catch green waves you need several sessions in a row, which is why the 5-lesson packs and surf camps are where Taghazout makes sense. A camp week bundles a bed, lessons, board, transport to the right beach each day and meals, and it is usually cheaper than putting the same thing together yourself. Book early if you want a camp between October and March, the busy season.
When to surf: beginners vs experienced
- Beginners: April to October. The swell is smaller and cleaner. Afternoons often bring an onshore trade wind, so lessons start in the morning. The water is at its warmest (about 19–20.5 °C from June to October).
- Experienced surfers: October/November to March. Big, consistent north-west Atlantic swells light up the points, Anchor Point above all. The water drops to about 16.5–17.5 °C in January–March: bring or rent a 3/2 mm wetsuit.
- Winter beginners are fine too. Schools simply take you to sheltered beach breaks on the big days. The best time to visit Agadir has the month-by-month weather and sea temperatures.
The spots, north to south
- Killer Point. A right-hander for advanced surfers, north of the village.
- Anchor Point. The famous one: a long, world-class right point that needs a winter swell. Advanced only, crowded and localised. Watch it from the cliff.
- Hash Point. Right in front of the village; beginner to intermediate on small days.
- Panoramas. On Taghazout beach. Beginners and intermediates; many schools use it.
- Banana Point. At the river mouth in Aourir. Mellow and forgiving, good for beginners and longboards.
- Crocro beach and Devil's Rock. Tamraght's beach breaks, where most beginner lessons happen.
If you are a confident intermediate, the day trip to Imsouane is worth it: its bay wave gives rides of 600 m and more, ideal on a longboard. It sits 45–60 minutes further north.
Getting there from Agadir
- Alsa bus L32 ("Mouquaouama Sud Inbiaat – Taghazout Village") via Anza, Aourir and Tamraght. Expect roughly 7.5–10 MAD cash to the driver, 45–60 minutes, about every 30 minutes by day (waits of up to 50 minutes are reported). Line L33 continues to Tamri.
- Shared grand taxi: 15–25 MAD per seat. Fastest cheap option.
- Private taxi: about 150 MAD from Agadir; 300–450 MAD from the airport (see airport to the city).
- Hotel pickup: included in most platform lessons, which is why their price is higher than a walk-in lesson.
Yoga, food and the rest of the day
Taghazout is as much a yoga village as a surf one. Drop-in classes cost 80–150 MAD; Surf Maroc's shala listed 120 MAD pre-paid and 150 MAD walk-in. Surf-and-yoga weeks start around €450. Between sessions: a tagine is 40–70 MAD, a surf-café coffee 20–35 MAD, a smoothie bowl 45–70 MAD.
Not surfing? A camel ride on the beach or a quad trip into the dunes also runs from this stretch of coast. Most visitors fit a lesson into a week in Agadir; see the one-week itinerary.
Things nobody tells you
- Points are not for lessons. Anchor and Killer are crowded and localised; beginners stay on the beach breaks and nobody gets hurt.
- Morning is better. The wind usually turns onshore in the afternoon.
- Children: ask the school about its minimum age and whether it runs kids' groups before you book. Ideas for the rest of the family are in Agadir with kids.
- Check "kit included" in writing, especially with touts on the beach. The Agadir scams page lists the usual tricks.
- Sun: the reflection off the water burns fast even when it is cloudy. Rash guard plus sunscreen.
Taghazout surf lessons: frequently asked questions
How much is a surf lesson in Taghazout?
A group lesson of 2–2.5 hours with board and wetsuit costs 250–450 MAD (about €25–40); many schools simply list €25. A private lesson is 400–800 MAD (€40–75), around €45 at most local schools, and 700–1,000 MAD if it includes video analysis. GetYourGuide beginner lessons with pickup run €22–36.
When is the best time to learn to surf in Taghazout?
April to October. The swell is smaller and cleaner, which is what you want on your first days. From October/November to March the big north-west Atlantic swells arrive and the famous point breaks start working: great for experienced surfers, too much for beginners at the points (beginners still surf the beach breaks in winter).
How do I get from Agadir to Taghazout?
Taghazout is about 19–20 km north of central Agadir, 25–30 minutes by car. Alsa city bus L32 runs there via Anza, Aourir and Tamraght (expect roughly 7.5–10 MAD cash, 45–60 minutes). A shared grand taxi is 15–25 MAD per seat; a private taxi about 150 MAD.
Do I need a wetsuit in Taghazout?
Yes, all year. The sea stays between about 16.5 and 20.5 °C. In winter you want a 3/2 mm wetsuit. Lessons include one; renting on your own costs about 55 MAD a day.
Is a surf camp worth it?
If you want to actually learn, yes. A week of 7 nights with lessons, board and meals costs €360–800, which is less than booking the same lessons and rooms separately. Five group lessons on their own run 1,100–1,700 MAD. For one try-out session, a single lesson is enough.
Which Taghazout surf spots are for beginners?
Panoramas (on Taghazout beach), Banana Point at Aourir, and Crocro beach and Devil's Rock at Tamraght. Hash Point works for beginners on small days. Anchor Point and Killer Point are for experienced surfers only.
