Souss-Massa National Park, south of Agadir, is one of the last places on earth with wild northern bald ibis, and its river mouths fill with flamingos from October to March. The Massa sector is free; full-day tours from Agadir cost about 350–500 MAD.

Bring binoculars. The bald ibis nesting cliffs are fenced off and the flamingos stay out on the water. Without binoculars you will see dots. With them, this is one of the best half days in the region for anyone who likes wildlife.

The northern bald ibis

The northern bald ibis is critically endangered, and the wild Moroccan population lives here: in the park and on the cliffs and dunes at Tamri. The last confirmed count was a record 147 breeding pairs and about 708 birds in 2018; numbers have since been reported rising, but there is no confirmed newer count.

  • When: resident all year. Early morning, when they leave the cliffs, or late afternoon.
  • Season: sources disagree. Park guides point to the spring breeding season and to feeding flocks from May to October; birding guides recommend winter to spring at Tamri.
  • How: the nesting cliffs are fenced. Look for feeding birds in the dunes and fields near the road, and keep your distance.
  • Tamri is on the way to Imsouane and the Alsa L33 bus runs there along the coast through Taghazout, so you can combine it with a coast day.

Flamingos at the Massa and Souss river mouths

Flamingos gather in the Oued Massa and Oued Souss estuaries mainly from October to March. Migration peaks in March–April and September–October. Sightings are likely in season but not guaranteed.

The Oued Souss mouth is just south of Agadir. Camel rides along the "flamingo river" there are a popular way to see it; see camel rides in Agadir for prices.

Best months to visit

  • March–May: spring migration, mild days, ibis breeding season.
  • September–November: autumn migration and the first flamingos.
  • December–February: flamingos in the estuaries; after rain the Massa track can need a 4x4.
  • June–August: too hot at midday. Go at dawn or late afternoon only.

How to get there

  1. By car to Massa: about 60 km south of Agadir, around 1h15. The last 8 km to the river mouth at Sidi R'bat is a sandy track: fine in a normal car when it is dry, 4x4 after rain.
  2. By car to Rokein: 15 km, about 30 minutes on the P1216 towards Inezgane and Aït Melloul.
  3. By public transport: bus to Massa village, then a grand taxi to the river mouth. Count about 3 hours door to door, and agree the taxi's return pickup before you walk off.

Coming straight from the airport? The airport is south of the city, so see Agadir airport to the city for transport options and prices.

A guide makes the biggest difference for the ibis: they know where the flocks fed that week. For flamingos at the Massa mouth, going alone works fine. See all Agadir attraction prices.

Tips

  • Binoculars are essential.
  • Ask the Massa car-park guard where the ibis were seen the day before.
  • Stay on the paths and keep away from fenced nesting areas.
  • Walk the Massa estuary: 5 km, flat, the best way to see the river mouth.
  • Bring water and sun protection. Summer middays are hot.
  • Planning several trips? Compare with Paradise Valley and Legzira and Tiznit, or build them into a week in Agadir.
