Imsouane Day Trip from Agadir: Surf The Bay and How to Get There

Imsouane is a surf village 90 km north of Agadir, 1h20–1h30 by road, famous for The Bay, a right-hand wave you can ride for 600 m or more. There is no direct bus; a private taxi from Taghazout costs about 400–600 MAD return.

No direct bus. The Alsa L33 coast bus ends at Tamri, short of Imsouane. Sort your return before you go: a taxi waiting for you, a transfer booked, or a surf school day trip that brings you back.

The Bay and Cathedral

  • The Bay: one of Africa's longest right-hand waves, with rides of about 600 m or more (up to ~800 m is claimed). A slow, peeling wave, ideal for longboards and for beginner-to-intermediate surfers.
  • Cathedral: the point that comes alive on bigger swells. Experienced surfers only on those days.

If you are learning, The Bay on a small day is close to perfect. If you have never stood up on a board, do a couple of lessons at Taghazout surf schools first, then come here for the long rides.

Prices from local surf guides and transfer listings, checked October 2026. Taxi prices are negotiated: read fair prices in Agadir and common scams before you agree one.

For two or more people, the taxi from Taghazout split between you is reasonable. Driving yourself is the most flexible: the N1 coast road runs past Taghazout and Tamri, and you turn off for the last ~8 km.

Surf day trips

Surf schools in Taghazout run Imsouane surf days with transport and, usually, coaching. We could not confirm current prices; expect roughly €40–70 per person depending on whether a lesson is included. Ask what is included: board, wetsuit, transport, lunch and time in the water.

  • Board and wetsuit hire in Taghazout runs about 105–160 MAD a day for a board and ~55 MAD for a wetsuit, a useful benchmark for what you pay in Imsouane.
  • A surf package that charges extra for the board or wetsuit on top of a "lesson" price is a red flag.
  • For lessons closer to Agadir, see Taghazout surf lessons.

When to go

  • October–April: the best season; the Atlantic swells are bigger and more consistent.
  • Summer: small waves, fun for learners on The Bay.
  • Wetsuit: a 3/2 mm in winter.

The village after 2023

Parts of the old fishing village and seafront at Imsouane were demolished by the authorities in 2023. The village is quieter than older guides and blog posts suggest. We could not verify the current state, so do not rely on old listings for food or rooms; bring water and snacks if in doubt. The wave is the same as ever.

An Imsouane day, step by step

  1. Early start: leave Agadir or Taghazout in the morning; 1h20–1h30 from Agadir, 45–60 minutes from Taghazout.
  2. Check the conditions at The Bay on arrival; on a big day, watch Cathedral from the shore.
  3. Surf session on The Bay.
  4. Break, then a second session if the tide and wind allow.
  5. Back to Agadir before dark.

Not a surfer? Imsouane is mainly a surf trip. For a non-surfing day out from Agadir, Paradise Valley or Essaouira are better choices. Building a longer trip? See one week in Agadir.

Imsouane: frequently asked questions

How far is Imsouane from Agadir?

About 90 km north on the N1, the last ~8 km on a side road: 1h20–1h30 by car. From Taghazout it is 45–60 minutes. Some booking sites quote 48 km; that is wrong.

Is there a bus from Agadir to Imsouane?

No direct city bus. The Alsa L33 coast bus stops at Tamri, well short of Imsouane. Your options are a private taxi (400–600 MAD return from Taghazout), a private one-way transfer from Agadir (~400–500 MAD), a shared minivan on Bookaway (from about $23), or a surf day trip from a Taghazout school.

What is The Bay at Imsouane?

The Bay is one of Africa's longest right-hand waves, with rides of 600 m or more (up to ~800 m is claimed). It is a slow, peeling wave that suits longboards and beginner-to-intermediate surfers. Cathedral is the other main spot, a point that works on bigger swells.

When is the best time to surf Imsouane?

Imsouane works on most swells. The best season is October to April; summer waves are small but fun for learners. Winter water needs a 3/2 mm wetsuit.

Can beginners surf Imsouane?

Yes, The Bay is one of the best learner waves on the coast on small and medium days. Cathedral on a big swell is for experienced surfers only. If you have never surfed, take a lesson first; Taghazout's schools run group lessons for 250–450 MAD.

Is Imsouane still worth visiting after the 2023 demolitions?

Parts of the old fishing village and seafront were demolished by the authorities in 2023, so the village is quieter than older guides suggest. We could not verify its current state. The wave itself is unchanged, and for surfers it is still worth the trip.
